A fire outbreak late Saturday night gutted more than 10 shops at the popular Terminus Market in Jos, Plateau State, reducing clothes, shoes, and other goods to ashes.
The incident occurred around 10:00 p.m. after most traders had closed for the day, according to eyewitnesses who spoke to Daily Trust.
Reporters who visited the scene on Sunday morning, observed that the affected shops suffered extensive damage, with large quantities of merchandise completely destroyed.
The exact cause of the blaze remains unconfirmed by market officials, though some traders suspect an electrical fault as the likely trigger.
Firefighters and emergency responders from multiple agencies including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Plateau State Emergency Management Agency (PLASEMA), Federal Fire Service, and Plateau State Fire Service responded swiftly and coordinated their efforts to contain the flames.
A witness, Mr. Silas Lawrenzo, commended the rapid and collaborative response, noting that it prevented the fire from spreading further and potentially causing a larger catastrophe in the densely packed commercial area.
This latest incident marks the third major fire outbreak at Terminus Market in the past year.
A similar night fire ravaged a section of the market just three months ago, while earlier incidents have collectively resulted in goods worth millions of naira being lost.
Traders affected by Saturday’s fire expressed concern over recurring incidents and called for improved safety measures, including better electrical installations and regular fire safety inspections in the market.
Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing, and no casualties were reported. Market authorities are yet to release an official statement on the extent of losses or plans for recovery support.
