The Federal Government will open a completed 15-kilometre stretch of the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway to traffic on or before March 31, 2026, ahead of Easter celebrations.Minister of Works, David Umahi, announced the directive during an inspection tour of the ongoing dualisation project in Enugu State on Monday.
He expressed satisfaction with the quality and pace of work on the section, which has reached an advanced stage of completion.
Umahi instructed contractors and officials to ensure the road becomes operational by the end of the month, even if minor finishing works such as road markings and median gates remain incomplete.
“By the 31st of this month, this 15km must be opened for traffic. Even if it’s not marked, even if the median gates are not put, open the road before the 31st. That will be our Easter celebration,” he said.
The move is expected to significantly ease transportation challenges, reduce traffic congestion, and boost mobility and economic activities in the South-East region.
The 15km section, located near the Akama axis, forms part of the larger Enugu–Onitsha Expressway reconstruction project being executed under the Road Infrastructure Development and Refurbishment Investment Tax Credit Scheme.
The minister has also directed that remaining sections of the highway be completed using durable concrete pavement for longevity.
Full completion of the entire expressway is targeted for May 2026.
