FG Suspends All Pilgrimage to Israel, Middle East

The Nigeria Christian Pilgrim Commission (NCPC), under the Federal Government, has announced an immediate and indefinite suspension of all Christian pilgrimages to Israel and the broader Middle East region. The decision comes in response to the escalating security tensions and recent military developments across the area.

Bishop Stephen Adegbite, Executive Secretary of the NCPC, made the announcement, emphasizing that the move prioritizes the safety and well-being of Nigerian pilgrims.

He explained that the suspension covers all upcoming trips organized by the Commission as well as those by private pilgrimage operators.

"You are aware of the latest security developments in Israel and the wider Middle East," Bishop Adegbite stated. "In view of the state of emergency declared by Israeli authorities and restrictions on public gatherings, the Commission has decided to put on hold all pilgrimages... until the security situation normalises."

He further clarified that the measure will remain in place until international travel to Israel is deemed safe again, with the NCPC closely monitoring the situation in consultation with relevant stakeholders.

The announcement follows the safe return of the final batch of over 500 pilgrims from the 2025 pilgrimage exercise to Israel and Jordan, who landed in Nigeria earlier this week. No Nigerian Christian pilgrims are currently stranded in the region as a result of this decision.

This suspension reflects ongoing concerns over regional instability, including reported military actions and restrictions that have impacted travel and public safety.

The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to protecting citizens and advised against any related demonstrations within Nigeria that could heighten tensions.

The NCPC urged intending pilgrims and state Christian Pilgrims Welfare Boards to remain patient and await further updates as the situation evolves.

The Commission assured that arrangements would resume promptly once peace and normalcy are restored to the holy sites and surrounding areas.
