FG Bans Establishing New Tertiary Institutions for Six Years

The Federal Government of Nigeria has introduced a six-year ban on the establishment of new tertiary institutions, including universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.Education Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa announced the decision following Wednesday's Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, chaired by President Bola Tinubu.

The temporary ban aims to enhance the quality of education and promote the long-term sustainability of existing institutions, with a particular focus on addressing challenges faced by private universities.

While acknowledging the persistent high demand for higher education in the country, the minister highlighted that many institutions, especially private ones are grappling with financial and operational sustainability issues. The ban forms part of broader reforms in the education sector endorsed by the FEC, shifting emphasis from rapid expansion to consolidation and improvement of current facilities and standards.

In a related development, the FEC approved amendments to the National Postgraduate Medical College Act. These changes will recognize medical fellowship qualifications as equivalent to PhD degrees, facilitating academic career progression and removing barriers for super-specialized medical professionals.

The proposed amendments, developed in collaboration with the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation, will be forwarded to the National Assembly for legislative action.

This move is expected to harmonize qualifications and better support the needs of Nigeria's healthcare and academic sectors.
