A powerful explosion rocked the entrance to the United States Embassy in Oslo early Sunday, causing minor structural damage but no injuries, Norwegian police confirmed.
The blast occurred shortly after 1:00 a.m. local time at the consular section of the embassy in western Oslo.
Witnesses reported a loud detonation, followed by smoke and broken glass littering the snowy ground near the entrance.
Authorities described the device as an improvised explosive and have mounted a major investigation involving bomb squads, drones, helicopters, K9 units, and extensive cordons.
Oslo police spokesperson Frode Larsen said one working theory is a possible link to terrorism, potentially tied to the ongoing Middle East conflict, though investigators stressed that all possibilities remain open and no arrests have been made.
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre denounced the attack as “unacceptable” and reaffirmed the country’s commitment to safeguarding diplomatic premises.
He spoke directly with the US embassy leadership to express solidarity and support.
The US State Department confirmed the incident, thanked Norwegian authorities for their rapid response, and said it is working closely with local police.
Damage was limited to cracked glass doors, scorch marks, and superficial harm to the entrance area. No embassy staff or members of the public were hurt.
The incident has raised alarm in one of Europe’s most peaceful capitals, with security stepped up around diplomatic sites as the investigation continues.
No group has claimed responsibility, and officials are still determining motive and perpetrators.
