Barely three months after defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to the All Progressives Congress, APC, a former governorship aspirant on the platform of the PDP in the 2023 gubernatorial election in Plateau State, Brig.-Gen. John Sura, has resigned from the ruling party.
Gen. Sura’s resignation from the APC marks his second exit from a political party within a year, underscoring growing uncertainty around his political trajectory.
In a letter dated March 21, 2026, announcing his resignation from the APC and addressed to the APC Chairman of Panyam ward in Mangu Local Government Area of the state, Gen. Sura stated that his resignation takes immediate effect.
Without giving specific reasons for his abrupt resignation, Gen. Sura expressed appreciation to members of the party for the support and cooperation he received during his brief stay in the APC.
“I thank the leadership and members of the party for the support accorded to me while I was a member,” he said in the letter.
Gen. Sura’s sudden resignation from the APC has raised a lot of talking points within political circles in the state, with some political analysts pointing out that it may not be unconnected with the defection of Governor Caleb Mutfwang to the APC, with many believing that the retired military officer’s chances of getting the APC ticket for the 2027 governorship election would not be guaranteed.
Others believe that since Sura is from the same local government area as Mutfwang, it would be practically impossible for the APC to give him the 2027 governorship ticket and as such, his gubernatorial dream would be truncated.
Though the retired general is yet to reveal the next party he would pitch his tent with, there are speculations that he is likely to settle for the African Democratic Congress, ADC, or the Young People’s Party, YPP, where he is expected to launch his gubernatorial ambition.
