Ex-Google Executive Matt Brittin Appointed New BBC Director-Genera

The BBC has named former Google executive Matt Brittin as its new Director-General, marking a significant shift for the public broadcaster as it navigates challenges from digital competition and funding pressures.

Brittin, who served as President of Google for Europe, the Middle East and Africa for nearly two decades before stepping down in 2024, is set to become the corporation’s 18th Director-General. He will take over from Tim Davie, who resigned late last year.

The BBC board approved Brittin’s appointment last week, with an official announcement made on Wednesday.

He is expected to assume the role on May 18.Brittin’s selection highlights the BBC’s push for digital expertise amid growing competition from streaming platforms.

He has no prior background in television or traditional journalism, which has sparked some debate among media observers.

BBC Chairman Samir Shah praised Brittin’s “passion for the BBC,” his understanding of the organisation’s challenges, and his commitment to its independence.
