Ex-commissioner declares for Reps seat in Edo

The immediate past Commissioner for Education in Edo State, Paddy Iyamu, has formally declared his intention to contest for the Oredo Federal House of Representatives seat.

The declaration took place on Friday at the All Progressives Congress Secretariat in Oredo Local Government Area, in the presence of party leaders and supporters. The event drew key stakeholders and was marked by celebrations and a show of solidarity.

Speaking during the event, Iyamu dismissed claims that he is not a grassroots politician, citing his longstanding contributions to the APC in Oredo since 2016. “I am here to officially declare my intention to run for the Oredo Federal House of Representatives seat in the presence of party leaders and my supporters,” he said. “Those who know Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu can attest to my commitment in building the party and supporting our candidates.”

Iyamu highlighted his role in past elections, including his efforts in mobilising voters for Senator Monday Okpebholo, and pointed to his empowerment initiatives for women and youths as evidence of his connection with the people. He noted that since 2019, he has sustained women empowerment programmes across wards, including monthly support schemes in Ward 10.

“In 2020 and 2024, I went round the nook and crannies of Oredo campaigning. I supported youth leaders financially to galvanise support and ensure victory for our candidates,” he said.

“From 2019, I started women’s empowerment in Oredo, supporting businesses and families. Today, the results are visible. I make bold to say that I have the numbers and I won overwhelmingly.”

Responding to allegations that he was rejected at the ward level, Iyamu described them as false and politically motivated. “It is painful when people try to paint me as a stranger. The same people know the role I played. My only ‘crime’ is my decision to contest,” he said, adding that his relationship with the state leadership of the party has remained cordial.

Earlier, the APC Chairman in Oredo, Dr Osamudiamen Osarenkhoe, called for unity among party members and described Iyamu as a loyal party man who respects leadership and due process. “Paddy is a man who respects the party and its leaders. Power belongs to God. If it is his turn, no one can stop it. We must stop backbiting and work together to build a stronger party,” Osarenkhoe said.

Dignitaries at the event included former Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Ambassador Uyi Igbe; former House of Representatives member, Hon. Patrick Obahiagbon; Hon. Valentine Asuen; APC State Secretary, Lawrence Okah; and members of the City Boy Movement, among others.
