In a significant political shift, eight members of the House of Representatives from Kano State have officially announced their defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Green Chamber.
The lawmakers made the announcement during proceedings in the House of Representatives, marking a major boost for the APC in Kano, a key political battleground. Their move comes amid broader realignments in the state, following Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s earlier resignation from the NNPP.
The defection was witnessed by prominent political figures, including Kano State Governor Abba K. Yusuf, Deputy Senate President Senator Barau Jibrin (DSP Sen. Barau), and former Kano Governor Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, along with other dignitaries and party leaders. The high-profile presence underscored the strategic importance of the move.
This development is part of a larger wave of defections in Kano, which also saw 21–22 members of the Kano State House of Assembly cross over from the NNPP to the APC around the same period. The shifts are expected to reshape the political landscape in the state ahead of future elections.
Political analysts view the defections as a reflection of ongoing realignments within Nigeria’s political parties, with the APC strengthening its foothold in the North-West region.
Further details on the identities of the eight federal lawmakers and their constituencies are expected to be released in the coming days. The Green Chamber is anticipated to formally recognize the party change in due course.
