Edo ADC Chieftain welcomes defectors, mobilizes against Tinubu's reelection

A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, Ken Imasuagbon, has urged Nigerians to mobilise against President Bola Tinubu’s second-term bid in 2027.

Imasuagbon, a former governorship aspirant in the Peoples Democratic Party and All Progressives Congress in Edo, stated this in Ewohimi, Esan South-East Local Government Area of Edo State, while receiving a wave of defectors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) into the ADC on Sunday.

He said the time has come for citizens to reclaim their mandate and decisively reject what he described as failed leadership.

He said, “I am calling on Nigerians to begin mobilising against the second-term bid by President Bola Tinubu, as the time has come for citizens to reclaim their mandate.”

Addressing party faithful and supporters, he said the defection of the PDP members led by former PDP chieftain, Chief Clifford Eineh, was part of a growing political shift ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Imasuagbon said Nigerians at both the state and federal levels must prepare to decisively reject what he described as failed leadership.

He said that the electorate would also resist any attempt by Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, to secure a second term, stressing that the people’s will would ultimately override political intimidation.

He likened the influx of new members into the ADC to a “tsunami,” noting that it signalled increasing public confidence in the party as a viable alternative.

According to him, the ruling All Progressives Congress’s claim of controlling a majority of governors does not equate to grassroots acceptance or electoral victory.

Also speaking, former Edo State Governor and ADC National Legal Adviser, Prof. Oserhimen Osunbor, commended the resolve of both new and existing members to strengthen the party.

He dismissed the notion that the APC’s dominance would guarantee success at the polls, warning that internal challenges and provisions of the Electoral Act could upset expectations.

Osunbor further described as unrealistic claims that millions of votes could be delivered for the President in Edo State, maintaining that political outcomes would ultimately be determined by the people.

The event attracted several notable figures, including Herberta Okonofua, Akhakon Anenih, Braimoh Okonofua, Hon. Sylvester Ewanehi, and the Edo State Chairman of ADC, Kennedy Odion, among other stakeholders.

With the general elections coming up next year, the opposition parties, especially the ADC, are in pole position to battle President Tinubu for the country’s top seat.

The ADC will hold its convention on April 14 in Abuja, which will set the tone for who emerges as the party’s presidential flagbearer.

However, in Edo State, the party is being led by a former governor of the state and APC National chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, who has vowed to lead the party to victory after the attack on the party secretariat and his residence.
