The Department of State Services (DSS) has successfully rescued Alhaji Hamza Durya, the Administrative Secretary of Kibiya Local Government Area, who was abducted on Friday night from his residence in Durya village.
Armed men had stormed his home in a coordinated raid, waking his son to locate him before chaining, blindfolding, and taking him to a livestock room in a community within nearby Rano Local Government Area.
Kano State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, confirmed the rescue on Wednesday, praising the DSS for acting promptly and professionally.
He said operatives rescued the victim unharmed and arrested two suspects, who sustained gunshot wounds during the operation.
“The Kano State Government considers this a welcome development and a testament to the dedication and professionalism of our security agencies,” the commissioner stated.
He added that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has consistently provided resources to boost security operations across all 44 local government areas, and this success highlights the effectiveness of the state’s strategies against crime.
Durya, while recounting his ordeal, revealed that the kidnappers demanded N300 million initially, which they later reduced to N100 million after claiming he was close to the governor.
He alleged that the gang, which came from Rijana in Kaduna State, was tipped off by someone in his community who misled them into believing he had large sums of money.
“They chained me and closed my face, keeping me in a chicken and livestock room. Throughout my captivity, I never saw them pray,” Durya said.
One of the arrested suspects, who identified himself as Nasiru, confessed that the gang of about 10 members came from Rijana in Kaduna.
He admitted they received local information and that guns were delivered to them later. The rest of the gang escaped, with some sustaining gunshot wounds.
The government urged residents to remain vigilant, report suspicious activities, and cooperate with security agencies to strengthen the state’s security network. No ransom was paid for Durya’s release.
