Court of Appeal Upholds Suspension of PDP's Anyanwu, Abdulrahman, Ajibade, Bature

In a significant ruling on Monday, March 9, 2026, the Court of Appeal in Abuja has affirmed the suspension of four key former national officers of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The affected officials include:

Senator Samuel Anyanwu (former National Secretary),

Mohammed Abdulrahman (former National Vice Chairman, North Central),

Kamaldeen Ajibade (former National Legal Adviser),

Umar Bature (former National Organising Secretary).

The appellate court, in a decision delivered by a three-man panel led by Justice Mohammed Danjuma, upheld the earlier judgment of the Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice James Omotosho. That lower court ruling,

delivered on October 31, 2025, had imposed the suspensions and also restrained the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognizing the outcomes of the PDP's controversial 2025 National Convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The suspensions originated from actions taken by the PDP's National Working Committee (NWC) in early November 2025, amid escalating internal crises and disputes over the party's leadership and convention processes.

The officers were accused of anti-party activities and violations related to the halted convention, which had aimed to elect new national leaders, including producing Tanimu Turaki as National Chairman in one faction's view.

This latest appellate decision deepens the ongoing leadership fractures within Nigeria's main opposition party, reinforcing the Federal High Court's stance and potentially impacting future party conventions and recognitions by electoral authorities.

The ruling marks a key development in the PDP's protracted internal battles, with implications for its stability ahead of upcoming political activities.
