Botswana has appointed Nigerian energy leader Akinwole II Omoboriowo as Board Member and Vice Chairman of the Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) Board of Directors, aiming to enhance governance, tackle persistent electricity supply issues, and fast-track the expansion of renewable energy nationwide.
The appointment, approved by President Advocate Duma Boko and supported by Minister of Minerals and Energy Bogolo Joy Kenewendo, brings Omoboriowo's extensive expertise to a key national utility at a pivotal time.
Omoboriowo, a prominent figure in African power infrastructure and energy finance, has more than two decades of experience in utility-scale generation, project structuring, cross-border energy development, and energy market reforms.
As Chairman and CEO of GENESIS Energy Group, he has spearheaded projects exceeding 780MW in operation, construction, and advanced development across Nigeria, South Africa, Benin Republic, Zambia, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, Mali, and the United Kingdom, with a broader pipeline surpassing 4.5GW.
His background includes leadership in conventional power, distributed renewables, natural gas commercialization, and investment financing skills seen as vital for addressing Botswana's energy challenges.
The move supports BPC's "Maduo 26" five-year transformation strategy (launched in 2022), which focuses on operational efficiency, financial recovery, and regional benchmarking.
It aligns with the national Integrated Resource Plan to diversify the energy mix, boost renewable capacity, improve grid resilience, and increase participation in the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) for regional power trade.
Botswana has faced declining output from its main Morupule B coal plant (dropping from 3,328 GWh in 2022–23 to 2,674 GWh in 2024–25, according to World Bank data), contributing to supply constraints.
The appointment is expected to drive reforms in corporate structure, capital efficiency, governance, and sustainable investment to stabilize supply and position the country as a potential net exporter of clean energy.
In a LinkedIn post reacting to the role, Omoboriowo expressed gratitude and commitment: “I assume this responsibility with humility but with buoyancy, high commitment to duty, and unwavering dedication to delivery. The work ahead is substantial, but so too is the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to a critical national institution at an important moment in its evolution.”
The decision highlights growing intra-African collaboration, leveraging expertise from Nigeria's dynamic power sector to support Botswana's transition toward cleaner, more reliable energy.
No specific timeline for immediate initiatives was outlined, but the focus remains on governance strengthening and renewable acceleration.
