Borno Children Forced Into Terrorism With Guns, Uniforms

A shocking viral video circulating on social media has sparked widespread outrage in Nigeria, showing dozens of young boys, some as young as nine, dressed in Nigerian Army camouflage uniforms and forced to perform military-style drills while handling guns in a remote forested area of Borno State.

The children, many wearing oversized uniforms reportedly looted from fallen soldiers, appear lined up and jubilating as they engage in paramilitary training under the supervision of armed militants. The footage is widely believed to show forced recruitment tactics used by Boko Haram or its splinter group ISWAP, which continue to exploit vulnerable children, often drawn from the Almajiri street-begging system across northern Nigeria, turning them into child soldiers through indoctrination and coercion.

Local sources in Borno State have raised concerns that the boys in the video may include recent abductees from areas such as the Ngoshe axis in Gwoza Local Government Area, following intensified insurgent attacks in the region. The militants’ use of stolen military attire further illustrates their brazen strategy to militarize and brainwash the younger generation amid the persistent insecurity in Nigeria’s northeast.

This incident once again highlights the grave and ongoing child rights violations in the conflict zone, where terrorist groups systematically recruit minors in clear violation of international humanitarian law and child protection standards.
