Former presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has decried the continued killings by terrorists in Nigeria, accusing political leaders of prioritising the struggle for power ahead of the 2027 elections instead of addressing the country’s worsening insecurity.
Obi made the remarks on Friday in a post on X while reacting
to a recent terrorist attack on Ngoshe community in Borno State, which
reportedly targeted a military base and an internally displaced persons (IDP)
camp.
The former governor of Anambra State said the attack claimed
the lives of both civilians and soldiers, while many others remain missing.
According to him, he watched several videos of the incident
with “deep horror,” describing the tragedy as another painful reminder of the
suffering many Nigerians endure daily.
Obi criticised political leaders for focusing on political
calculations ahead of the 2027 general elections while insecurity continues to
claim lives across the country.
“How long will Nigerians continue to bear the consequences
of poor leadership and mismanagement? How many more lives must be lost before
decisive action is taken to secure our communities, protect the vulnerable, and
dismantle the structures of these insurgents?
“While Nigerians are slaughtered daily by terrorists, what
is more troubling is that amid these daily killings, our political leaders are
preoccupied with selfish schemings on how to steal, grab and run away with the
next election cycle, and keep us in insecurity, poverty and underdevelopment,”
Obi said.
