Boko Haram Insurgents Overrun Military Base in Borno, Kill Several Soldiers

Suspected Boko Haram terrorists launched a deadly assault on a Nigerian military camp in Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State, overrunning the facility and killing the commanding officer along with other personnel.

The attack occurred in the early hours of Monday, around 12:30 a.m., when the insurgents approached the base from multiple directions and engaged troops in intense fighting, according to local security sources familiar with the incident.

One source described the situation as "very sad," confirming the loss of the commanding officer (CO) and noting additional casualties among officers and soldiers, though exact numbers remain unverified at this time.

The incident highlights the persistent security challenges in Nigeria's northeast, where Boko Haram and affiliated groups like ISWAP continue to target military outposts despite ongoing counter-insurgency operations under Operation Hadin Kai.

Military authorities are yet to release an official statement on the attack, including details on casualties, the response by troops, or any recovered equipment. Further updates are expected as investigations continue.

This latest violence comes amid reports of fluctuating militant activity in the region, with recent military successes in neutralizing terrorists offset by occasional bold strikes on bases and communities. Residents in Kukawa and surrounding areas remain on high alert following the assault.
