Benue, Kaduna, Katsina, Plateau Hold Dialogue to Tackle Insecurity in States

The Office for Strategic Preparedness and Resilience (OSPRE), in partnership with the UK-funded Strengthening Peace and Resilience in Nigeria Programme (SPRING) and the Plateau State Peacebuilding Agency (PSPBA), has hosted a high-level consultative and peer-learning dialogue in Jos, Plateau State.

The event brought together security officials and peacebuilding actors from Benue, Kaduna, Katsina, and Plateau States to foster collaboration and address shared insecurity challenges.

Director General of OSPRE, Chris Ngwodo, stressed the importance of a united approach, noting that no single tier of government can tackle today’s complex security threats alone.

He described the dialogue as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen subnational coordination, improve early warning systems, and promote adaptive, locally driven responses to emerging threats.

Ngwodo revealed that in 2025, OSPRE, through its SPARCS programme, has trained over 300 men and women across the north-west and north-central zones on detecting, analysing, and responding to conflict risks in real time.

He expressed appreciation to SPRING and the UK Government for their continued support for peacebuilding and resilience initiatives in Nigeria.

“No single tier of government can address today’s security challenges in isolation. What is required is a coherent, collaborative framework that aligns local knowledge with national capabilities,” Ngwodo stated.

The Team Lead for SPRING, Dr Ukoha Ukiwo, highlighted the need for sustained collaboration among government institutions, communities, and development partners to tackle the root causes of insecurity.

He emphasised that building local capacities and creating peer-learning platforms like this dialogue are vital for developing resilient systems that can prevent conflicts before they escalate.

Director General of the Plateau State Peacebuilding Agency, Julie Sanda, commended OSPRE and SPRING for their consistent efforts in promoting peace and stability in Plateau State and the broader northern region.

She called for expanded partnerships to scale up successful interventions and achieve greater impact at the community level.

The high-level meeting is expected to enhance coordination and strengthen collective responses to insecurity across the affected states.
