Bauchi Gov Bala Mohammed Set to Defect to APC This Week

Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, is reportedly finalizing arrangements to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) this week, multiple sources have confirmed.

The move comes after a recent closed-door meeting with President Bola Tinubu, where the terms of the switch were discussed.

According to insiders, negotiations remain active, with the APC offering Mohammed a senatorial ticket for the forthcoming elections but attaching tougher conditions than those extended to previous defectors.

Key conditions reportedly include:

No full control over the APC structure in Bauchi State

No unilateral right to anoint his successor as governor

A formal apology to Seyi Tinubu (the President’s son) over a March 2025 public disagreement involving palliative distribution in Bauchi during Ramadan

Sources say the governor has already tendered the apology and is pushing for a 60/40 power-sharing formula in the state party leadership, though he remains uncomfortable with restrictions on succession planning.

The alleged defection is also reportedly tied to the ongoing legal troubles of Mohammed’s Commissioner for Finance, who faces terrorism and money-laundering charges and is said to have threatened to implicate the governor if not released.

Should the switch take place, it would reduce the number of remaining PDP governors to a handful and increase the APC’s tally of state executives to 32.

The development has caused deep disappointment in Governor Seyi Makinde’s PDP camp in Oyo State.

Close associates described the move as a major betrayal, noting Mohammed’s previous leadership role in the PDP Governors’ Forum and his involvement in party reconciliation efforts.

“If even someone of his stature cannot stay to help rebuild the opposition during these difficult times, what hope is left for a credible democratic alternative?” one source lamented.

This report is based on investigative sources and has not been officially confirmed by Governor Bala Mohammed, the APC, or the PDP.

In February 2026, following an earlier meeting with President Tinubu, the governor publicly denied any intention to defect, stressing his loyalty to the PDP and his focus on governance and security in Bauchi State.
