Baruwa Takes Over as NURTW President, Ends MC Oluomo's Control of Secretariat

Tajudeen Baruwa has officially assumed leadership of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), reclaiming the national secretariat in Abuja from Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, following prolonged court battles.

The transition occurred peacefully on Monday, backed by enforceable court judgments affirming Baruwa as the legitimately elected president.

The National Industrial Court in Abuja had ruled in Baruwa's favor on March 11, 2024 (suit No. NICN/ABJ/263/2023), declaring him the duly elected leader for a second term.

This decision was upheld by the Court of Appeal in Abuja on November 8, 2024 (appeal No. CA/ABJ/CV/293/2024), where a panel of justices Hamma Akawu Barka, Nnamdi Dimgba, and Asmau Ojuolape Akanbi dismissed challenges from MC Oluomo's loyalists, describing their appeal as lacking merit and awarding costs of N100,000 against them.Baruwa's faction had waited nearly two years to regain control of the secretariat, which they said had been unlawfully occupied.

The union issued prior notifications to the Nigerian Police about the court orders and their intention to resume operations, ensuring a non-violent process.

Speaking during the takeover, Baruwa emphasized compliance with the law: “We are taking over in a peaceful manner, and it is not a forceful takeover but just carrying out the court’s orders..

"We decided to resume back at the office today without causing any violence. Although the other faction attacked one of our members, who is now in the hospital, the situation is under control. We are still open to reconciliation as we are a lawful organization and not a troublemaker. No one is above the law.”

General Secretary Suleiman Musa added that the union had informed authorities in advance and welcomed media presence to document the event.

The leadership crisis in the NURTW stemmed from disputes over elections and authority, including MC Oluomo's contested inauguration.

Courts have now nullified opposing claims, solidifying Baruwa's position as president. The union reiterated its commitment to peace and openness to dialogue despite the tensions.
