Arewa Youths Call for Sack of Defence Minister Musa Over Insecurity Surge

Northern youth group Arewa Youths has called on President Bola Tinubu to immediately remove the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (rtd), accusing him of failing to curb escalating violence in the North.

In an interview on News Century TV aired on Wednesday, Arewa Youths President Abdul Danbature claimed that more military personnel have died under Musa’s watch than under any previous Defence Minister.

He alleged that over 100 soldiers were killed by terrorists in the past week alone, alongside more than 250 kidnappings. Danbature criticised the minister, saying he acts more like a “social media content creator” than an effective leader of Nigeria’s defence apparatus.

“We celebrated so much when General Christopher Musa was appointed as the Minister of Defence, but as it is today, we say no to Christopher Musa,” Danbature declared.

He demanded the minister’s resignation to make way for someone more capable.“Mr President, if you do not take any action, Christopher Musa will destroy your leadership as the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he warned.

“If you do not sack Christopher Musa, he will go down as the worst minister of defence in the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

The group noted that Northern youths played a key role in Tinubu’s 2023 election victory through massive turnout and support, and framed their demand as a call for accountability on security.

The statement reflects rising anger in northern Nigeria over persistent banditry, terrorism, mass kidnappings, and attacks on communities and security forces.

General Musa, a former Chief of Defence Staff, was initially welcomed by some northern stakeholders due to his military credentials, but recent violence has fuelled sharp criticism of his leadership and strategy.

No official response has yet come from the Presidency or the Ministry of Defence to the Arewa Youths’ demands.

The widely shared interview video has intensified public debate on social media about the government’s handling of national security challenges in the region.
