The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, said that President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress leadership’s style of governance is strengthening the ruling party while steadily reducing the influence of the opposition, as more Nigerians align with the APC.
Akpabio, speaking on Friday at the APC 8th National Convention and 4th Elective Convention in Abuja, said Tinubu’s reforms are driving progress across key sectors including the economy, infrastructure, security, and agriculture.
Since assuming office in May 2023, Tinubu has introduced major reforms that have been met with mixed reactions from Nigerians.
However, Akpabio maintained that these policies have helped reposition Nigeria on the global stage.
The Senate President stated, “APC is showing the way. I want to say that, as a result of the good governance brought by Mr President, there are now only two political parties in Nigeria: APC and others. APC and others.
“Mr President, since you came on board as President, this is your first major convention. The last one was when you became the candidate of our great party. I thank you because what is attracting all of us and all Nigerians to the APC today is good governance.
“From removing subsidies, to harmonising the idea of multiple exchange rates, and to your reforms in the education sector, you have brought about progress that now gives students greater opportunities for national education. You have brought about agricultural revolution. Your policies are real. Now people can travel from Lagos all the way to Ibadan. Now people can travel from Lagos to Calabar. As I speak now, I have taken a ride through the coastal roads that we contemplated 50 years ago in the Niger Delta region.”
The Senate President added that, despite the challenging economy, Tinubu is making significant progress in turning things around.
He continued, “We are proud of these reforms. You are bringing dignity to Nigeria. Nigeria is returning to the world stage. For members of our great party from all states in the country, we are now 32 governors, and the number is growing. By election day, we may have more. I congratulate you all.
“And for those of us in the legislature, Mr President, we are sure of our control of all that goes through. Because when the House is in order, when the National Assembly is aligned, and when everyone is committed to your Renewed Hope agenda, Nigeria will see progress.
“For those concerned about security today, I want to assure you that we are on course. With the support of Nigerians, we shall overcome these challenges. We are going to bring peace to Nigeria. We are going to restore peace to the APC family.”
Thirty-one governors, party leaders, and 8,453 delegates are currently gathered for the 8th APC National Convention.
They are expected to confirm party members who will serve on the 25-member National Working Committee.
In attendance are President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, ministers, senators, members of the House of Representatives, and other APC leaders from across the country.
