The All Progressives Congress (APC) has appointed Opeyemi Bamidele, Senate leader, to head the campaign council for the re-election bid of Biodun Oyebanji, governor of Ekiti.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has
fixed June 18 for the conduct of Ekiti governorship election.
The party on Thursday unveiled a 57-member campaign council,
including Adeyemi Adaramodu, chairman of the Senate committee on media and
public affairs; Cyril Fasuyi, chairman of the Senate committee on establishment
and public services; Adeoye Aribasoye, speaker of the Ekiti state house of
assembly; and Biodun Olujimi, former deputy governor of the state.
Sola Elesin, chairman of the APC in Ekiti, will serve as
chairman of the campaign council, while Oyeniyi Adebayo, chief of staff to the
governor, is the secretary.
In a statement issued by his directorate of media and public
affairs, Bamidele accepted the appointment and pledged to lead the campaign
council.
The senate leader said the campaign would provide an
opportunity to showcase the achievements of Oyebanji’s administration and those
of the APC at the national level.
Bamidele thanked the party leadership for nominating him to
lead the council and described the appointment as both a privilege and a huge
challenge.
Bamidele said he would work with the council, the Ekiti APC
structure, and the national secretariat of the party to secure the governor’s
re-election.
He added that the governor’s second-term bid would reflect
the administration’s performance in the state.
“Oyebanji’s re-election will be a referendum given our
records of performance in the 40 months that he has been leading Ekiti state,”
he said.
“Under his leadership, Ekiti state has enjoyed cohesion,
peace, and stability politically and socially.”
Bamidele also described the governor as a leader who has
pursued inclusive governance.
“Governor Oyebanji has provided transformative leadership
that accommodates the interests of all regardless of their political and
religious affiliation,” he said.
“Such a leader deserves another term to consolidate and
complete development projects and programmes he has initiated for the
generality of Ekiti residents.”
