The Abia State Government has confirmed the arrest of Nigerian Army Staff Sergeant Amoke Simon (also referred to as Amoke Gunshot Simeon in earlier reports), who recently received a compassionate promise of medical support from Governor Alex Otti.
According to a statement by Ferdinand Ekeoma, Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, military authorities informed the state that the soldier was detained in connection with alleged fraud he supposedly committed some time ago. The arrest took place shortly after Sergeant Amoke visited the governor and was offered assistance.
Background details shared by the government indicate that Sergeant Amoke had previously served in Abia State and sustained an injury during his duties elsewhere. An NGO facilitated his approach to the state government seeking medical help. Governor Otti's offer to support his treatment — including potential overseas care was extended purely on humanitarian and compassionate grounds, consistent with the administration's practice of aiding citizens and security personnel who have faced misfortunes in the line of duty.
Ekeoma emphasized that the state government is not responsible for investigating corruption cases, which fall outside its purview. However, it had requested due diligence on the soldier, a step that may have prompted the military's swift action leading to the arrest.
“The government is in full support of every legitimate action being taken by the Nigerian Army to discipline the erring personnel,” the statement added. It further affirmed that Abia State would continue providing financial, medical, and other humanitarian support to victims of various misfortunes, regardless of the current controversy.
Context from Recent EventsSergeant Amoke had gained attention in Abia for his reported past role in operations against notorious kidnapper Obioma Nwankwo (known as “Osisikankwu”) around 2010, and for allegedly rejecting a ₦50 million bribe. He had been seeking treatment for leg injuries sustained in a later accident while on duty in the North East. Governor Otti had publicly pledged to fund his medical care abroad after meeting him.
Some reports circulating alongside the arrest mention additional allegations of large-scale fraud (including claims around ₦114 million) and possible impersonation or false claims linked to past operations, though the Abia government’s official statement focused on the compassionate nature of the governor’s gesture and its support for military discipline.
The development highlights the balance between humanitarian support for injured security personnel and accountability within the armed forces. The Abia State Government maintains it will not waver in assisting those in genuine need while respecting the Nigerian Army’s internal processes.
