Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has revealed that more than 500,000 residents have been forced from their homes in Borgu Local Government Area due to ongoing terrorist activities and insecurity.
The displaced individuals are now scattered across several neighboring states including Kebbi, Kwara, Kogi, and Kaduna as well as the Federal Capital Territory and even the Republic of Benin.
Governor Bago disclosed this during a Presidential Initiative event in Borgu, where food items, nutritional supplies, and essential drugs were distributed to vulnerable people impacted by the humanitarian crisis.
He emphasized that the state government, working closely with the federal government and development partners, is intensifying efforts to reunite internally displaced persons (IDPs) with their families and facilitate their safe return to their communities as quickly as possible.
According to the governor, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the clearing and rehabilitation of the National Park in Borgu to make it habitable again.
Plans also include establishing permanent security bases in the area to combat criminal elements and restore lasting peace.
Bago appealed to the people of Borgu for continued patience, highlighting the federal government's commitment through immediate humanitarian aid as a sign of concern for those affected.
The Emir of Borgu, Mohammed Sani Haliru Dantoro Kitoro IV, praised Governor Bago's tireless efforts to enhance security and support displaced residents.
He also acknowledged the federal government's interventions and urged the community to remain patient while authorities work to restore safety.
Minister of State for Agriculture Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi echoed these sentiments, thanking the federal government for its support and commending the governor's peace restoration initiatives.
Local leaders, including Borgu Local Government Chairman Abdullahi Mohammed Nasir, Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs Ahmed Ibrahim Inga, and Jikadan Borgu, similarly appreciated the joint state and federal assistance.
They noted that the aid would significantly alleviate the suffering of residents who have lost homes and livelihoods to the violence.
The event culminated in a symbolic handover of food items to selected beneficiaries from various communities in the Borgu Kingdom.
Efforts to address the root causes of insecurity in the region continue, with a focus on security enhancements and community resettlement.
