The faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aligned with Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike has firmly denied claims that it is working to undermine the party or support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's re-election bid in 2027.
Amid escalating internal crises and accusations from rival PDP groups, spokespersons and loyalists in the Wike-led camp have insisted that their actions remain within the party's framework and do not equate to backing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate.
The clarification follows repeated allegations from the opposing faction, led by figures like Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, that Wike had pledged to "hold down" the PDP for Tinubu ahead of 2027.
Makinde has publicly stated he would not support Tinubu's re-election and accused Wike's group of aligning with the president, claiming they enjoy backing from the federal government, judiciary, and INEC.
In response, aides and supporters close to Wike have refuted suggestions of any formal commitment to sabotage the PDP.
They emphasized that Wike's political choices, including his support for Tinubu in 2023, stem from personal assessments of leadership quality rather than anti-party activities.
One associate noted that Wike has consistently defended his independence, stating the PDP failed to consult him on key decisions, such as candidate selections.
The Wike camp has pushed back against narratives portraying them as anti-PDP, arguing that the party's ongoing divisions marked by rival conventions, court battles, and expulsions are not solely attributable to their actions.
They maintain that reconciliation efforts should focus on genuine party unity rather than unfounded accusations of betrayal.
This stance comes as the PDP grapples with deep fractures ahead of 2027. The Makinde-backed group has accused Wike loyalists of anti-party conduct and vowed to proceed independently, asserting that "the people are with us" while labeling any alignment with Wike as support for Tinubu.
The Wike faction, however, insists it is committed to the PDP's survival and success, rejecting any notion of endorsing Tinubu or abandoning the party's presidential ambitions.
The internal rift has fueled speculation about the opposition's viability in challenging the APC in the next general elections, with both sides trading barbs over loyalty, strategy, and the path forward for Nigeria's main opposition platform.
