The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has decried the recent wave of violence in Zamfara State and urged stronger joint efforts to prevent further bloodshed.
In a message shared Sunday night via the African Union’s
official X account, Youssouf described the February 21, 2026 assault in
northwestern Nigeria as a heinous and well-coordinated terrorist attack.
According to the statement, the violence left more than 50
civilians dead, while several women and children were taken captive.
The African Union made it clear that it firmly rejects
terrorism and violent extremism in all forms, especially attacks directed at
innocent civilians.
It stressed that targeting vulnerable groups such as women
and children amounts to serious human rights abuses and poses a major danger to
peace and stability.
“The African Union unequivocally rejects all acts of
terrorism and violent extremism against civilian populations, particularly
women and children, as grave violations of human rights and serious threats to
peace, security, and stability.”
Youssouf expressed solidarity with Nigeria, saying the
continental body stands fully with the country during this difficult period.
He extended sympathies to families who lost loved ones and
wished those injured a quick recovery.
The AU Chairperson also reiterated the Union’s continued
backing of Nigeria’s efforts to address insecurity and rebuild lasting peace in
affected communities.
He demanded the immediate, safe and unconditional freedom of
all abducted women and children, calling on those responsible to release them
without harm.
He stressed the importance of stronger collaboration and
coordinated strategies to safeguard civilians and stop similar tragedies from
occurring again.
The statement added that the appeal reflects the African
Union’s ongoing commitment to advancing peace, security and stability across
the continent.
