Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Abuja following his representation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 39th Ordinary Session of the African Union (AU) Heads of State and Government in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The summit, which ran from February 14 to 15, 2026, alongside the 30th AU General Assembly, centered on the theme “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063.”
Discussions highlighted Africa's push for better water management, sanitation improvements, and advancement toward the AU's 2063 development vision.
In addition to the main plenary sessions, Vice President Shettima joined high-level side events and held bilateral meetings with African leaders and business figures to strengthen Nigeria's diplomatic, economic, and strategic ties across the continent.
A statement from Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Communications, described the engagements as successful and reaffirmed Nigeria's commitment to continental unity and progress.
The summit concluded with Burundi's President Evariste Ndayishimiye taking over as AU Chairperson for 2026.
