Two Taraba Senators Defect to APC, Boosting Party’s Senate Majority to 81

Two senators representing Taraba State, Haruna Manu and Shuaibu Lau, have defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the defections during plenary on Wednesday, reading the formal letters submitted by the lawmakers.

Senator Haruna Manu, who represents Taraba Central Senatorial District, stated in his letter that the decision followed wide consultations with his constituents.

“I write with due respect to formally notify the Senate of my decision to withdraw my membership from the PDP and to align myself with the All Progressives Congress (APC),” Manu wrote.

Senator Shuaibu Lau, representing Taraba North, also formally declared his switch to the APC during the session.

The defections increase the APC’s numerical strength in the 10th Senate to 81 seats, further consolidating the ruling party’s majority in the upper chamber.

The move comes amid ongoing political realignments across the country, with several lawmakers citing various reasons, including alignment with the federal government for leaving opposition parties to join the APC.

The Senate President acknowledged the letters, noting the changes in party affiliation in line with constitutional provisions on defections by legislators.
