Tinubu To Meet King Charles, Pay State Visit To UK

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will undertake a historic two-day state visit to the United Kingdom from March 18 to 19, 2026, marking the first formal state visit by a Nigerian leader to Britain in 37 years.

The visit comes at the invitation of King Charles III, who will host President Tinubu and First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu at Windsor Castle, west of London, alongside Queen Camilla.

The announcement was made by the British Royal Family via their official X account, confirming the acceptance of the invitation and highlighting the ceremonial nature of the engagement.

This will be the first time a Nigerian president receives full state honours in the UK since General Ibrahim Babangida's visit in 1989. Previous Nigerian leaders, including Generals Yakubu Gowon (1973) and Shehu Shagari (1981), also undertook state visits hosted by the monarchy.

The landmark trip builds on strengthened Nigeria-UK bilateral ties, including a strategic partnership agreement concluded in November 2024 focusing on economic cooperation, immigration, and security.

President Tinubu has previously met King Charles III on multiple occasions: first on the sidelines of COP28 in Dubai in December 2023, and again in a private audience at Buckingham Palace in September 2024, where discussions covered climate change and global security.

Presidential aide Bayo Onanuga described the visit as a significant milestone, posting on X: “First state visit of a Nigerian leader to the UK in 37 years confirmed.

"President Tinubu and First Lady Remi Tinubu to be hosted by King Charles and Queen Camilla from 18th March to 19th March 2026.”

The state visit reflects the enduring diplomatic and cultural relations between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, with full details of the programme expected to be released in due course.

It reflects President Tinubu's active foreign policy engagement since assuming office in 2023, which has included state and official visits to countries such as Türkiye, Brazil, China, and others to advance trade, investment, and strategic partnerships.
