Tinubu Pledges Primary Healthcare Funding Expansion to 13,500 Facilities Nationwide

President Bola Tinubu has announced plans to extend funding through the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF) to more than 13,500 primary healthcare facilities across Nigeria.

Represented by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, at the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Health Convention and Roundtable 1.0 in Abuja, President Tinubu stated that over N98 billion was disbursed last year to support operational expenses for more than 8,300 primary healthcare centres (PHCs), one of the largest single-year investments in grassroots healthcare in recent memory.

"We have strengthened the Basic Health Care Provision Fund and consistently disbursed the quarterly allocation to primary health care centres, with over N98 billion disbursed to support operational expenses for over 8,300 Primary Health Care facilities last year," Tinubu said.

"We are expanding this very critical sustainable domestic financing mechanism to an additional 5,212 primary health care centres to reach a total of over 13,500 facilities."

The President described the health sector as vital to national productivity, security, economic growth, and human dignity, noting that no nation can thrive when its people are unhealthy.

The initiative forms part of his Renewed Hope Agenda to make quality, affordable healthcare a cornerstone of national development.

Already, the disbursed funds have enabled upgrades at 2,565 centres, now providing 24-hour services with trained staff, essential medicines, equipment, reliable power, and water while renovation continues at another 1,456 facilities.

Health insurance coverage has expanded to over 10 million vulnerable Nigerians, and the Maternal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative (MAMII) has connected more than 100,000 pregnant women to free emergency maternal and newborn care in supported facilities.

Tinubu also highlighted the retraining of over 78,000 frontline health workers in the past two years as part of wider reforms.

He urged APC governors, legislators, private sector players, development partners, traditional rulers, and faith leaders to support the effort by increasing health budgets toward the 15% Abuja Declaration target, strengthening state insurance schemes, ensuring facilities remain functional, and publishing annual health scorecards.

The expansion is aimed at improving equitable access to quality primary healthcare, particularly in rural and underserved communities, as part of the administration’s broader commitment to transforming Nigeria’s health sector.
