President Bola Tinubu has congratulated the winners of Saturday’s local government elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and by-elections in Kano and Rivers States, describing the victories as a boost for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) conducted polls across the six area councils of the FCT, as well as state constituency by-elections in Ahoada East II and Khana II (Rivers State) and Kano Municipal and Ungogo (Kano State).
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu urged the newly elected officials to serve with “humility, patriotism, and dedication,” viewing their mandates as a “sacred trust” from the people.
The President specifically praised FCT Minister Nyesom Wike for his “remarkable achievements” in the territory, which he said have translated into clear political gains for the APC.
He extended congratulations to the APC’s national leadership, as well as the party structures in Kano and Rivers, and all members for the electoral successes.
President Tinubu also commended INEC, security agencies, and voters for ensuring the elections were peaceful and largely successful.
He highlighted the “courage and discipline” shown by all contestants, noting that competitive participation strengthens democracy.
“The successful conduct of these elections further consolidates our democratic culture and institutions,” the President stated, while calling on INEC to sustain and improve its performance in delivering credible and exemplary electoral processes going forward.
The results from Saturday’s polls have been seen by observers as a significant show of strength for the APC in key political zones ahead of future contests, including the 2027 general elections.
