'Terrorists sent letter about plan to preach Before attacking,’ — residents speak on Kwara attack

Terrorists reportedly wrote a letter informing residents of their intention to preach before attacking the Nuru and Woro communities in Kwara state.

On Wednesday, at least 75 residents were killed, with several houses set ablaze when terrorists attacked the communities in Kaiama LGA of the state.

Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, governor of Kwara, had attributed the violent attacks to Islamic fundamentalists.

Tinubu subsequently ordered the deployment of an army battalion in the LGA.

According to the BBC, the terrorists had written to Umar Bio Salihu, the traditional leader, intimating him of their plan.

Their doctrine was said to have been viewed as an extremist version of Islam.

Salihu, who was not at home during the attack, said the terrorists visited his house first, abducting his wife and children.

The traditional leader returned to find his house razed and two children killed.

He said the terrorists wanted residents to renounce the Nigerian government and follow their teachings, adding that it was “against what the Quran teaches”.

Abdulla Umar Usman, a Woro resident, said the terrorists came into the communities in multitudes.

“Two of the community head’s children, who were medical students, were killed in front of the house before they set it ablaze,” Usman said.

According to Amnesty International, the terrorists had distributed leaflets to the two villages in the last five months.

Saidu Baba Ahmed, a Kwara lawmaker, told the BBC that the traditional ruler had contacted security operatives about the letter.

The military personnel were said to have briefly visited the communities to investigate, but after they left, the terrorists launched their assault.
