Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (Kogi Central) created a stir in the Senate plenary on Thursday during the budget defence by the Committee on Women Affairs, accusing the committee chair of deliberately sidelining her.
The senator expressed deep frustration over her alleged marginalisation in committee matters, particularly regarding preparations for the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) event in New York. She pointed to a lack of coordination among female senators on this key international women's platform and questioned why she was being treated differently.
She recounted receiving late notice only on Wednesday at 1:00 pm, for the CSW opportunity, promptly submitting her passport details within three hours, yet being informed later by the Ministry of Women Affairs that her participation was denied due to an alleged late response.
"I should not be treated differently from other women, especially concerning an event focused on the betterment of women," she stated emphatically.
Her remarks highlighted concerns about inclusivity and fair representation for female lawmakers in gender-focused initiatives.
The session saw no immediate public response from Committee Chair Senator Ireti Kingibe, Senate leadership, or the ministry. This latest incident adds to reports of ongoing friction involving Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan and certain Senate committee processes.
