Senator Seriake Dickson, representing Bayelsa West, has declared that it is extremely difficult to serve with integrity and honesty in Nigeria’s public service due to systemic pressures and challenges.
The former Bayelsa State governor made the remark on Monday, February 23, 2026, while receiving the Transparency in Leadership Award from the Centre for Credible Leadership and Citizens Awareness (CCLCA) in Abuja.
Dickson, who was honoured for his track record of accountability and ethical leadership during his eight-year tenure as governor and his ongoing legislative service, used the occasion to reflect on the realities faced by public officials committed to probity.
“It is tough, extremely tough to serve with honesty in Nigeria’s public service,” he said.
“The environment is not always conducive to transparency, and those who choose the path of integrity often face significant obstacles, resistance, and even personal costs.”
He commended the CCLCA for recognizing leaders who prioritize ethical conduct amid widespread concerns over corruption, mismanagement, and lack of accountability in governance.
The senator also called for stronger institutional reforms, better protection for whistleblowers, and a cultural shift toward valuing honesty in public life to make it easier for sincere public servants to thrive without undue compromise.
The award presentation was attended by political associates, civil society representatives, and members of the Bayelsa community in Abuja, who praised Dickson’s consistent advocacy for good governance.
Dickson’s comments come at a time when public trust in institutions remains low, with ongoing anti-corruption efforts by agencies like the EFCC and ICPC facing criticism over selectivity and political interference.
