Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, has strongly condemned the reported attack on former Anambra State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, former APC National Chairman John Odigie-Oyegun, and other African Democratic Congress (ADC) leaders in Benin City, Edo State.
Describing the incident as a “reported assassination attempt,” the senator called it “deeply disturbing” and warned that such violence has no place in Nigeria’s democracy.
“This development is deeply disturbing and has no place in our democracy. Politics must never descend into violence, intimidation, or threats against perceived opponents,” Akpoti-Uduaghan stated.
She expressed particular concern over “overzealous political actors who, in a bid to impress or demonstrate loyalty to Mr. President or any other leader, take it upon themselves to harass or attack members of the opposition.
"Such actions are reckless, counterproductive, and dangerous to our national unity.”
The senator stressed that democracy depends on healthy competition, free expression, and protection of dissenting voices.
“The opposition has every constitutional right to organise, mobilise, and carry out political activities without fear. Attempts to silence or endanger them undermine the very foundation of our democratic system.”
Akpoti-Uduaghan urged security agencies to launch a thorough investigation into the incident and ensure those responsible are held accountable.
“Nigeria must remain a nation where political differences are resolved through dialogue and the ballot, not through violence.”
As a senator, she reaffirmed her commitment to defending democratic principles, the rule of law, and the safety of all Nigerians regardless of political affiliation.
The attack occurred on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, during political activities at the ADC secretariat in Benin, where Olumide Akpata formally joined the party.
Suspected thugs reportedly trailed the convoy to Odigie-Oyegun’s residence, fired shots, smashed vehicle windshields, and damaged property, as evidenced by photos and videos shared by Yunusa Tanko of the Obidient Movement.
The incident has drawn widespread condemnation amid concerns over rising political intolerance and safety of opposition figures in Nigeria.
Security agencies are yet to provide detailed updates on the investigation.
