Former Senator Dino Melaye has vehemently condemned the Nigerian Senate's rejection of mandatory real-time electronic transmission of election results, declaring it an outright endorsement of rigging and a direct revelation of plans to manipulate the 2027 general elections.
In a fiery statement shared on his verified social media platforms on February 5–6, 2026, Melaye, who once represented Kogi West, expressed deep frustration and alarm, describing the Senate's decision as a deliberate assault on electoral integrity.
He specifically highlighted the removal of provisions that would have required presiding officers to transmit polling unit results electronically and in real time to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) IReV portal.
“Senate rejection of electronic transmission of result, open endorsement of election rigging and exposition of 2027 Rigging plan,” Melaye stated bluntly, capturing his sense of outrage and betrayal. He portrayed the move as a blatant step backward for Nigeria's democracy, one that deliberately preserves vulnerabilities for manipulation, ballot stuffing, and fraud.
Melaye accused the Senate of undermining public trust in the electoral system and warned that this action signals a premeditated scheme to compromise future polls. He called on lawmakers, civil society, opposition parties, and ordinary Nigerians to resist what he sees as an unpatriotic effort to subvert the people's will and ensure elections remain credible and transparent.
The former senator's strong language reflects widespread frustration among critics who view the Senate's retention of the existing flexible provision, allowing transmission “in a manner as prescribed by the Commission” as a weakening of safeguards introduced in the 2022 Electoral Act.
While Senate leaders, including President Godswill Akpabio, have clarified that electronic transmission was not fully rejected and remains in law, Melaye and others dismiss this as insufficient, insisting the refusal to mandate real-time uploads opens the door to abuse.
