Senate Confirms Justice Joseph Oyewole Kayode as Supreme Court Justice

The Nigerian Senate has confirmed the appointment of Hon. Justice Joseph Olubunmi Kayode Oyewole (also referred to as Hon. Justice Oyewole Joseph Olubunmi Kayode) as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

The confirmation follows President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's nomination, which was transmitted to the Senate in late January 2026, pursuant to Section 231(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

The nomination came after the National Judicial Council (NJC), under Chief Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, recommended Justice Oyewole alongside other judicial appointments at its 110th meeting on January 13, 2026.

Justice Oyewole, previously the Presiding Justice of the Court of Appeal, Enugu Division, underwent screening by the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters.

Senators commended his sterling qualities, extensive experience, and detailed 31-page curriculum vitae, which was circulated to lawmakers in advance for review.

The confirmation process aligned with ongoing judicial reforms, including President Tinubu's proposals to increase the number of justices in the Court of Appeal and judges in the Federal High Court to address case backlogs.
