Angry residents of Eleyewo Community in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State took to the streets on Saturday morning to protest the abduction of a couple by armed bandits the previous night.
The incident occurred on Friday, February 20, 2026, at about 9:45 p.m., when unknown gunmen emerged from surrounding bushes and attacked Mr. Jamiu Olawale and his wife as they returned home from their shop in an ash-coloured Toyota Camry.
The attackers abducted the couple at the frontage of their residence in Olaribigba Estate, Iluabo, and whisked them to an unknown destination.
During the assault, the gunmen opened sporadic fire, forcing other residents to flee for safety.
A neighbour, Mr. Patrick Ilumaro, who was seated outside his home, sustained a gunshot wound and was rushed to hospital, where he is receiving treatment.
In response, community members blocked the Akure-Owo Expressway during the protest, chanting solidarity songs to express frustration over the rising insecurity in the area.
The Ondo State Police Command's Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, confirmed the abduction and shooting in a statement, detailing the sequence of events and noting that investigations are ongoing.
The attack comes amid heightened concerns over banditry and kidnappings in Akure North, following the recent killing of Oba Kehinde Falodun, the monarch of nearby Agamo Community, by suspected bandits during an attempted abduction just two days earlier.
Residents have repeatedly called for intensified security measures to curb the surge in violent incidents.
No official update on the abducted couple's status or rescue efforts was available at the time of this report.
