Subsidies Removed for the Poor, Luxury Preserved for Politicians – Sowore

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has sharply criticized Nigerian politicians, accusing them of removing essential subsidies that affect ordinary citizens while indulging in lavish personal lifestyles, including relationships with "hookup" women.

In a widely circulated video statement, Sowore specifically referenced Senator Adams Oshiomhole, the former Edo State governor and ex-APC national chairman, but emphasized that such behavior extends across the political class.

"They are removing subsidies from the poor, while subsidizing their libid^s," Sowore said. "Oshiomhole is not the only one, all Nigerian politicians are flirting with hookup ladies."

The remarks come in the context of ongoing economic challenges in Nigeria, including the removal of fuel subsidies under President Bola Tinubu's administration in 2023, which has led to higher living costs, inflation, and widespread hardship for many citizens.

Critics like Sowore argue that while ordinary Nigerians face increased prices for food, fuel, and basic goods, some public officials appear disconnected, enjoying privileges such as private jets and extravagant spending.

Sowore's comments were reportedly triggered by a viral video showing Oshiomhole in a private jet with a woman identified as a South African lifestyle influencer and adult content creator. Sowore highlighted the contrast, suggesting politicians live in a "different economic universe" insulated from the struggles of everyday Nigerians, where inflation and hunger are not felt at "30,000 feet".

This is not the first time Sowore has spoken out on subsidy removal and elite privilege. He has previously argued that past subsidy regimes disproportionately benefited the wealthy and corrupt elements, but he has also criticized abrupt removals without adequate support for the vulnerable.

The statement has sparked reactions on social media, with many sharing the clip and debating the priorities of Nigeria's leadership class during a period of economic strain.
