PDP Slams Fintiri's Defection to APC as 'Unrestrained Cowardice'

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly criticized Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri following his formal defection from the PDP to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Friday, February 27, 2026.

In a statement issued by the PDP's National Working Committee (NWC), led by Tanimu Turaki (SAN), and released through National Publicity Secretary Ini Ememobong, the party described Fintiri's move as a betrayal of the platform that had supported his political career through multiple election cycles.

The governor announced his defection during a statewide broadcast in Adamawa, stating that the decision along with his entire cabinet and state PDP officials was made in the best developmental interest of the state and for greater alignment with federal priorities.

He reportedly displayed his new APC membership card numbered 001 to confirm the switch.

The PDP acknowledged Fintiri's legal right to defect but condemned it as contrary to political principles and morality.

The party argued that abandoning the PDP over "slight discomfort" or "minor inconveniences" demonstrated "unrestrained cowardice" rather than the mark of a principled politician.

It further described the action as a challenge to multi-party democracy and democratic consolidation in Nigeria.Key excerpts from the PDP statement include:

“This move, though long speculated, had attracted several rebuttals from the governor himself, even as recently as last week. By this announcement, the governor himself has confirmed what hitherto was a rumour.”

“For a person to abandon a platform that provided political coverage for him across many election cycles at the sight of slight discomfort is unambiguously an exhibition of unrestrained cowardice, and not a mark of a principled politician.”

“As we bid Governor Fintiri farewell, we remind him that history and posterity are the ultimate and unbiased judges of human conduct.”

The party urged its members in Adamawa to remain resolute amid the development, expressing confidence that the PDP's ongoing "rebirth movement" would reposition it for future electoral success.

The defection follows weeks of speculation, earlier denials by Fintiri (including after a recent presidential visit to Adamawa), and recent exits from the PDP by the Adamawa State House Speaker and several lawmakers.
