A political scientist, Akinwunmi Akinfenwa, has asserted that Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde maintains complete and unchallenged authority over the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State.Akinfenwa made the declaration during an appearance on Arise Television's Morning Show on Wednesday, where he responded to questions about political dynamics within the PDP.
He emphasized Makinde's dominance, particularly in Ibadan politics, stating: “While we can acknowledge that the FCT Minister Nyesom Wike is strong politically, when it comes to Ibadan politics, we must give it to Governor Seyi Makinde.”
The analyst drew a parallel to national politics, noting that President Bola Tinubu's recent remarks on the Rivers State crisis reflect pragmatic considerations. He explained that Tinubu values Wike's 2023 electoral contributions and grassroots influence in Rivers State, positioning him as a key figure ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Akinfenwa remarked: “President Tinubu is just trying to be pragmatic with his recent comment on the Rivers crisis because Wike delivered in 2023, and he has firm control of the grassroots in Rivers State. And the President is aware of this, and so he has to bring him closer, because he’s thinking 2027 when there will be a presidential election. So he knows that he needs him. It’s a terrible thing in politics, but there’s nothing anybody can do about that.”
The comments highlight ongoing discussions about internal PDP power structures, contrasting Makinde's solid grip on the party in Oyo with other influential figures like Wike at the national level.
