The Oyo State High Court sitting in Ibadan has declared the Peoples Democratic Party's (PDP) national elective convention, held on November 15 and 16, 2025, in Ibadan, as valid and legally conducted.
Justice Ladiran Akintola delivered the judgment on Friday, February 27, 2026, in Suit No. I/1336/2025, granting all 13 reliefs sought by the claimant, Folahan Malomo Adelabi, a card-carrying PDP member and candidate at the convention represented by his counsel, Musbau Adetunmbi (SAN).
The court affirmed that the convention complied fully with the PDP's constitution, the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria (as amended), and relevant provisions of the Electoral Act.
It declared the processes and outcomes proper and lawful, directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognize and give full effect to all decisions and elections from the event, including the emergence of Dr. Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN) as National Chairman and the entire National Working Committee (NWC).
The ruling builds on earlier interim orders from the same court on November 3, 2025 (renewed on November 14), which had provided the legal basis for proceeding with the convention amid conflicting court orders from other jurisdictions.
The PDP (Turaki-led faction) welcomed the judgment as a "vindication of both fact and law," describing it as reaffirming the obvious legality and transparency of the Ibadan convention.
The party emphasized that the suit protected members' rights to peaceful assembly and association, compelling adherence to advertised election guidelines. However, the decision adds to the ongoing PDP leadership crisis.
A rival faction (backed by Nyesom Wike and led by a National Caretaker Committee) dismissed the ruling as an "academic exercise" with no binding effect on INEC, citing a prior January 30, 2026, Federal High Court judgment in Ibadan that nullified the same convention and barred the Turaki-led NWC from parading as national officers.
This latest ruling follows months of factional disputes, multiple court interventions, and conflicting orders that have deeply divided the main opposition party ahead of future elections.
