The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has deployed 4,000 trained personnel throughout the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to provide comprehensive security coverage for the forthcoming Area Council elections.
FCT NSCDC Commandant Olusola Odumosu disclosed this during a consultative meeting with representatives of the National Peace Committee held in Abuja on Friday. He confirmed that the security arrangement will remain active before, during, and immediately after the polls, which the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled for Saturday, February 21, 2026.
Odumosu stressed that all deployed officers have received specialised electoral security training directly from INEC. He gave strong assurances that voters will be adequately protected against any form of intimidation, harassment, or interference by miscreants, and encouraged full participation without fear.
“Our responsibility as a key player in election security begins well before election day and continues until the final declaration of results,” the commandant stated. “We have held extensive briefings with all Divisional Officers to guarantee zero compromise in our operations.”
He added that plain-clothes operatives have already been strategically positioned at locations previously identified as potential flashpoints, where they are conducting discreet monitoring. The NSCDC will work in close synergy with sister security agencies to deter violence, ballot-box snatching, and other electoral offences.
Odumosu also appealed to parents, community leaders, and guardians to guide young people away from being used as tools by desperate politicians and to strictly observe all electoral rules and codes of conduct.
Asabe Ndahi, Project Manager of the National Peace Committee, who led the visiting delegation, commended the NSCDC’s advanced level of preparation. She reaffirmed the committee’s readiness to sustain engagement with security agencies to help deliver credible, violence-free elections across the FCT’s six Area Councils.
The polls will elect six Executive Chairmen and 62 Councillors to run the affairs of the Area Councils for the next tenure.
