NIS begins probe into allegations of s€xual assault by officer

The Nigeria Immigration Service has ordered a comprehensive investigation into allegations of misconduct involving one of its personnel following an online publication accusing an officer of unlawful detention and s€xual assault of a Nigerian woman.

In a statement posted on its X handle on Thursday, the Service said its attention had been drawn to an online report alleging grave misconduct, including unlawful detention and s€xual assault.

NIS described the allegations as serious and said any act of misconduct by its personnel was unacceptable and contrary to its professional standards.

“The attention of the Nigeria Immigration Service has been drawn towards an online publication alleging grave misconduct by one of its personnel, including claims of unlawful detention and s€xual assault involving a Nigerian woman,” the Service stated.

It added that, “any acts of misconduct by any of its personnel is entirely unacceptable and will be treated with the severity they deserve, as they undermine the Service’s values, ethics and professional standards.”

The agency said a comprehensive investigation had been ordered and assured that any personnel found culpable would face disciplinary and legal consequences.

“The Service has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the allegations, and any personnel found to have engaged in the misconduct will be held accountable and appropriate disciplinary and legal actions will be applied,” it added.

NIS further stressed that it would not shield any officer found to have violated public trust or the rights of individuals.

“The Service will neither shield nor condone any act that undermines public trust or violates the rights and dignity of individuals,” the statement added.

The statement followed a report by the Foundation for Investigative Journalism alleging that a 21-year-old woman from Akwa Ibom State was arrested by an immigration officer identified as Isa Makama and detained for several days.

The FIJ report claimed the woman was held without proper legal process after an encounter with the officer and alleged that she was repeatedly assaulted during her detention.

According to the publication, the incident allegedly occurred after the woman travelled and later had issues with immigration officials, leading to her arrest and confinement at a private location rather than an official detention facility.

The report further alleged that the woman’s release only came after interventions by individuals who became aware of her situation.

The NIS, however, did not confirm the details of the allegations but said it had initiated an investigation to ascertain the facts and ensure accountability where necessary.
