Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi, representing Ebonyi North Senatorial District, has commended the 10th Senate, led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, for what he described as a historic and courageous decision to advance electoral transparency in Nigeria.
In a statement, Sen. Nwebonyi highlighted that the Electoral Act 2022 (as amended) did not previously mandate the electronic transmission of election results from polling units to the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IREV). However, the Senate has now taken a proactive step by explicitly incorporating provisions for electronic transmission, aligning with the widespread desire of Nigerians for more credible and transparent elections.
He explained that the amendment requires presiding officers to electronically transmit results to IREV after the results have been signed on Form EC8A and copies provided to party agents and security personnel at the polling units.
This move, he said, marks a significant milestone in strengthening the integrity of Nigeria's electoral process."The 10th Senate has made history in our political and electoral journey," Sen. Nwebonyi stated. "By expressly inserting the electronic transmission of results, we are responding to the yearnings of the people for greater transparency and accountability.
"The senator emphasized that this bold legislative action deserves nationwide applause, as it enhances public confidence in elections and helps safeguard democracy.
Sen. Nwebonyi represents Ebonyi North and has been vocal in supporting reforms aimed at modernizing Nigeria's electoral framework.
The Senate's recent amendment came amid public discussions and follows rescinding of earlier positions in response to broader national sentiments on electoral integrity.
