Nigeria's Federal Government has recovered over ₦800 billion through its whistleblowing policy since its launch in 2016 under former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The disclosure came from the Minister of State for Finance, Doris Nkiruka Uzoka-Anite, during a one-day nationwide sensitisation programme on the whistleblowing policy's implementation, held in Sokoto.
Speaking at the event, Uzoka-Anite explained that the programme reviewed the policy's progress, pinpointed implementation challenges, and outlined steps to enhance its impact.
Despite facing some operational hurdles, she stressed the government's firm commitment to maintaining the initiative as a key weapon in combating corruption.
The minister encouraged all Nigerians to actively report corrupt activities and pressed state governments including Sokoto to adopt and formalise the policy at the sub-national level for broader effectiveness.
The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun (represented by Sokoto State Commissioner of Police Ahmad Musa), praised whistleblowers as essential "guardians of public trust and accountability."
He emphasised the urgency of bolstering legal and institutional protections to safeguard those who come forward.
Sokoto State Governor Ahmad Aliyu (represented by Commissioner of Finance Muhammad Jabbi Shagari) reiterated his administration's zero-tolerance stance on embezzlement and public fund misuse.
He noted alignment with federal anti-corruption drives and pointed to the state's "Money or Work" policy as a tool for holding officials and contractors accountable.
In a presentation titled “The Benefits of Whistleblowing Policy in the Fight Against Corruption in Nigeria,” Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Chairman Ola Olukoyede (delivered by Kamilu Ibrahim Gebi, Head of Public Affairs at the Sokoto Zonal Directorate) highlighted a noticeable decline in public participation in recent years.
While the policy initially garnered strong support, enthusiasm has diminished, necessitating renewed efforts and adjustments.
Olukoyede urged the National Assembly to expedite legislation offering robust legal protections for whistleblowers, calling such measures vital to sustaining Nigeria's ongoing battle against corruption.
