Nigeria Claims Nearly 375 Medals in 2025 as Sports Boost Economy

Nigeria's sports sector delivered strong results in 2025, winning nearly 375 medals across various international competitions while contributing significantly to the national economy, National Sports Commission (NSC) Chairman Shehu Dikko announced Thursday.

Briefing President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Dikko outlined key achievements under the "Renewed Hope Initiative for Nigeria’s Sports Economy." The sector added about 1.2% to GDP in the third quarter of 2025, attracted roughly N50 billion in private investment, and created around 140,000 jobs through direct, indirect, and induced employment in the sports value chain.

Dikko stressed that success is now measured beyond medals, emphasizing sustainable economic impact and job creation.

He called 2025 a "watershed" year, crediting reforms and strong presidential backing.

President Tinubu expressed satisfaction with the progress and renewed his commitment to developing a vibrant sports economy.

A major milestone was his approval for constituting the Board of the Nigerian Anti-Doping Agency (NADA), following the signing of the Anti-Doping Bill into law in 2025.

This resolved long-standing World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) compliance issues, allowing Nigeria to be recognized as a "clean" nation in global sports."Mr. President is very happy and excited with the progress," Dikko told State House correspondents.

"We are on the right track."The gains spanned football, athletics, basketball, para-sports, and emerging disciplines like cricket and rugby.

Looking ahead, the NSC plans continued infrastructure upgrades and momentum-building into 2026 to sustain athletic and economic success.
