The Concerned Professionals in the National Assembly have commended Senate President Godswill Akpabio for cancelling seven recent appointments by the National Assembly Service Commission (NASC), calling the decision lawful, timely, and in line with due process.
The appointments, three senior roles in the House of Representatives and four management positions in the National Assembly bureaucracy were nullified after protests from staff unions, professional bodies, and senior officers.
Complainants alleged breaches of rules on competence, seniority, and federal character principles. As chairman of the NASC, Akpabio reviewed the process, found the appointments non-compliant with statutory requirements, and ordered their outright cancellation.
He directed that future appointments and promotions strictly follow merit, seniority, and equitable representation across Nigeria. In a Monday statement signed by leader Mr. Simon Okechukwu, the group praised the move as a boost to transparency, fairness, and institutional credibility within the National Assembly.
The professionals also endorsed the Patrick Giwa-led Establishment Committee, set up by Akpabio to review personnel records, examine petitions, and recommend candidates for future appointments and promotions.
They urged the committee chaired by former House of Representatives Clerk and current NASC commissioner Patrick Giwa to accept submissions from staff and groups to address irregularities and build trust.
The group highlighted concerns over alleged financial inducements by unqualified individuals and specific cases, such as senior officers in the engineering department being bypassed for promotions in violation of rules requiring completion of at least two promotion levels.
They expressed full confidence in Giwa's integrity and track record, describing him as a seasoned administrator dedicated to due process.
The cancellations and formation of the review committee are viewed as key steps toward restoring professionalism and accountability in the management of the National Assembly's workforce
