A prominent chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Bala Na’Allah, has suggested that an unidentified "something somewhere" is actively obstructing the effective governance and smooth operation of Nigeria.
In an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, the former senator argued that the country's persistent challenges cannot be blamed solely on individual presidents or leaders. He pointed instead to a deeper, systemic issue that undermines national progress despite the existence of a robust constitutional framework.
Senator Na’Allah emphasized that Nigeria possesses "one of the best documents" in the form of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), designed to serve as a solid foundation for governance and to translate good intentions into benefits for all citizens.
He noted: "When the framers of our constitution decided to sit down and put everything in place... I believe that they wanted a situation where there would be committed Democrats who would put the spirit of the constitution into play.
"However, he lamented a recurring pattern where public dissatisfaction grows with each administration over time, leading Nigerians to pin blame on the sitting president. According to him, this overlooks the real culprit.
"Nigerians have failed to understand that there must be something somewhere that is working against the smooth running of the affairs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria," he stated, adding that citizens and leaders alike have chosen to ignore this force and focus criticism on the presidency instead.
The APC leader stressed the importance of collective responsibility, urging a closer examination of the oaths of office taken by elected officials and how faithfully they uphold the spirit of the constitution.
"It’s an issue of collective responsibility," he said. "Go and look at the constitution. Look at the oath of office each elected official has taken before assuming office, and then put it on their face and tell me how many of them have succeeded in keeping to the spirit of that constitution."
Senator Na’Allah's comments come amid ongoing debates about Nigeria's governance challenges, economic pressures, and political accountability under the current administration.
