Former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), has told a Federal High Court in Abuja that his legitimate income sources total billions of naira, as he challenges an interim forfeiture order on 57 properties seized by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Through his counsel, Joseph Daudu (SAN), Malami filed a motion seeking to vacate the court's interim order, particularly targeting three specific properties among the 57 listed by the EFCC for potential forfeiture to the Federal Government. The properties are suspected by the anti-graft agency to be proceeds of unlawful activities.
In support of his application, Malami disclosed details from his asset declarations submitted to the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB), outlining the following sources of wealth:N374,630,900 from salaries, estacodes, severance allowances, and related earnings during his public service.
N574,073,000 generated from the disposal of assets.
N10,017,382,684 as turnover from his private businesses.
N2,522,000,000 in loans extended to businesses.
N958,000,000 received as traditional gifts from personal friends.
N509,880,000 realized from the launch and public presentation of his book, Contemporary Issues on Nigerian Law and Practice: Thorny Terrains in Traversing the Nigerian Justice Sector, My Travails and Triumphs.
Malami's legal team argued that these declared incomes demonstrate the legitimate origins of his wealth, urging the court to discharge the interim forfeiture orders, initially granted ex parte and particularly to exclude the three highlighted properties, some of which were reportedly acquired before his tenure as AGF.
The EFCC had secured the interim forfeiture in January 2026 for the 57 properties, valued collectively at around N213 billion, linked to Malami and two of his sons.
The case forms part of broader probes involving allegations of money laundering and unlawful asset acquisition. The matter remains pending before the court, with Malami seeking full vacation of the orders to clear his name regarding the seized assets.
